Twenty-one consecutive opinion polls have now shown a clear majority of Scots support independence and our right to decide our country’s future with a second referendum.
Yet the Westminster government continues to say it will do everything in its power to block that vote. In fact Boris Johnson says we will have to wait until 2055 to exercise our democratic right.
When the Prime Minister visited Scotland in January he tried to dismiss the growing support for independence as ‘’irrelevant’’. His refusal to accept the democratic will of Scots is a disgrace.
Every recent opinion poll has predicted a huge majority for pro-independence parties in the upcoming elections for the Scottish parliament. The most recent predictions suggest the SNP will win 70 of the 129 seats at Holyrood. Contrast that with Boris Johnson’s Conservatives, predicted to win just 25.
The pro-independence vote would be bolstered by a further 10 seats predicted to go the Greens.
Yet the Prime Minister has the temerity to pretend they have the moral authority to stand in the way of a second independence referendum.
Scots recognise that we cannot rely on Westminster to rebuild our country after the pandemic in a way that reflects our values and our ambition to create a better, fairer country.
We don’t agree that putting social justice and wellbeing at the heart of the Covid recovery is an irrelevance.
For the sake of democracy we cannot allow a government with so little popular support in Scotland to dictate to us when we can have a democratic say in our own future
