Burnham forced to agree terms for Indyref2 that already exist!

Andy Burnham has stated that majority public support in Scotland for a second independence referendum will be the indyref2 trigger.

Speaking in the Westminster Parliament, Burnham responded to a question from Chris Law MP, saying:

“I would also remind him that on that question of a border poll (in Ireland), it is to be considered by the Northern Ireland Secretary when there is a clear consensus in the country, when public opinion has changed to the point where the call has to be considered.

“I would say exactly the same situation in Scotland.”

Burnham then stated: “I am not aware that there is a majority of public support for another referendum, and until that changes, Mr Speaker, there won't be one.”

The people of Scotland should therefore take him at his word, his statement given to the Westminster Parliament that retains the power over the Constitution. That is as clear a commitment as you can get from the UK PM that majority support for another referendum in Scotland means Scotland gets one. Our job is to hold him to it.

Some polling already shows majority support.

Ipsos found in May 2026 that only 22% of people living in Scotland said there should never be another referendum. Around two-thirds wanted one at some point and 55% wanted another referendum within ten years (not in 10 years but within 10 years).

An April 2026 Survation poll found that 52% of Scots believed a majority of seats for pro-independence parties at May’s Scottish Parliament election would give the

“Now let's prove it with independent polling:

Believe in Scotland wants to commission fresh, independent polling specifically on support for another referendum ASAP. We will publish the findings and put them directly to the Prime Minister. When you sign our petition, it will ask if you want to support that project - please do, and let’s show him that indyref2 is now on the cards.

Scottish Government a mandate to hold another independence referendum. That not only already exists, but there is a record majority, with 73 pro-independence MSPs having been elected to Holyrood. That is further evidence that it's time for Westminster to recognise Scotland’s right to choose Scotland's future.

You do not have to support independence to support that right. Indeed, many democrats who would currently vote NO still believe the decision belongs to Scotland’s people.

Sign our action-petition and put our Indyref2 demand direct to Burnham by email. Signing sends emails to your MP and List MSPs, the Prime Minister and the Secretary of State for Scotland, demanding they support a second referendum now. That makes your support a direct demand for action from the very people with the responsibility to deliver it.

23,000 have already signed, so let’s push this petition well beyond 25,000 signatures. If you have already signed, don't worry - the email we send has been updated to include Burnham's indyref2 pledge, so please sign (you can untick any MP or MSP you don't want to send it to) and then please share the petition again today and ask friends and family to add their names. We need everyone who supports Scotland’s right to choose to make themselves heard.

Burnham says he is unaware of majority support. Let’s make sure he becomes very aware of our support. Sign now
