“In Caithness, Sutherland and Ross, households pay some of the highest energy bills in the country, despite our communities generating vast amounts of renewable energy. The Highlands should be reaping the benefits of the energy it produces, but instead consecutive UK Governments have chosen to penalise the region. Urgent market reform is needed to ensure Scotland’s contribution is properly recognised and reflected in energy costs.”

“I recognise the positive contribution Believe in Scotland’s petition is making to the debate on energy policy in Scotland, and I support its proposals. There are other equally important aspects of energy regulation which need to change, in order to accelerate the transition to a clean, affordable energy system which is fit for the 21st century. In particular ending fossil fuel subsidies and tax breaks would ensure that future investment prioritises Scotland’s renewable resources. Breaking the artificial link between fossil fuel prices and the retail electricity price would ensure that renewable energy, already the cheapest to generate, would also be cheaper to consume. Taken together these changes would create a far stronger incentive for households and businesses to move away from fossil fuel for heat and transport, safe in the knowledge that green electricity would be the affordable option. The Scottish Greens will continue to make the case for these changes, both now in the devolved context and as we move forward with the case for Scotland to decide its own policy on these critical issues.”

Well done to Believe in Scotland for this campaign. It has attracted huge support. The treatment of Scottish people and companies, though higher fuel bills and absurd TNUoS (Transmission Network Use of System Charges) is a long standing discrimination against Scottish based generators. However, the UK and Scottish Government failure to support our own oil and gas production - the only country in the world with major reserves and developed mature world class industry and people- is political cowardice in genuflecting to the Greens. That is playing a major part in the lack of a balanced electricity generation policy.
